South Mumbai's iconic Cafe Samovar converted into an art gallery

In March 2015, Mumbaikars lamented the shutting down of the five-decade-old Café Samovar. At the legendary eatery in Kala Ghoda, culture enthusiasts would meet up to discuss art over steaming cups of cutting chai and kheema parathas. The place, which was once a haunt of artists like MF Husain, Tyeb Mehta, KH Ara, Anjolie Ela Menon, as well as many Bollywood stars, has now been converted into an art gallery. It has reopened as Jehangir Art Gallery’s fourth exhibition space and has been designed in an eco-friendly manner, with the rear and a section of the roof made of stiffened glass. This design allows the inflow of natural light and an unrestricted view of the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) and its lawns.
