in Black & White
The Jehangir Art
Gallery to present curated works of the late Daniel David Talegaonkar, from
February 22nd to 28th, 2022.
Mumbai, India. 16 February 2022
From 22nd to 28th
February 2022, Mumbai’s prestigious Jehangir Art Gallery will present “Life in
Black & White”, a major exhibition of select works by the artist, the late Daniel
David Talegaonkar (1967-2020).
The exhibition in a way chronicles the
journey of an artist who preferred to get off the beaten track and discover
himself through his work. Daniel, or Danny to his friends and to everyone else who
knew him, was always a gregarious, free spirit. He seeped himself in drawing
and painting right through childhood, and his by-line on social media “My heart beats for art” was simply his
way of expressing this.
Though Danny was trained as a applied artist
and worked as one for some years, he soon chafed at the stifling requirements
of this field. He made an unconventional entry into fine art through his close
association with other artists, who later became lifelong friends. It took him
some time to discover what truly moved him as an artist. He found great joy in the
spontaneous “single-line” drawings and the impromptu dry-brush, black ink
sketches he made during one of the numerous drawing tours he made with fellow
artists. Once he discovered this, he never looked back. He continued refining
and developing his style and stuck to it, revelling in the great joy it gave
him.
This exhibition was originally scheduled for
April-May 2021, and like other artists Danny had applied some years earlier and
had got this slot. However, in July 2020 Daniel suddenly passed away,
succumbing to COVID-19 during the early stages of the pandemic. Given the
uncertainties and the difficult phase the family was in, his friends petitioned
to the Gallery, who graciously agreed to reschedule this event.
“Life in Black & White” presents a
carefully curated set of Danny’s works. They give an idea of how he looked at different
shades and facets of life, and the world around him, using just black ink and a
style that he made his very own, even as he constantly experimented and pushed its
boundaries. It is a selection of 40-45 of his works that he had exhibited
earlier at Jehangir Art Gallery and other venues in Mumbai and other parts of
India. The exhibition would be inaugurated on 22nd February 2022 by
Shri P.T. Kolambekar and Smt. Meera P. Kolambekar, Danny’s art teachers at
school, who inspired him in many ways and encouraged him even after he passed
from high school.
It would be a wonderful opportunity to know
this artist through his work and by speaking to his close friends and artists,
who shared a close bond with this extremely outgoing, warm and witty human
being.
